Eastern North America Buddha’s Light Choir Gathers in Toronto for Intensive Training Ahead of Lincoln Center Performance

April 4, 2026

In preparation for their upcoming performance at Lincoln Center this June, members of the Eastern North America Buddha’s Light Choir convened at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto from April 3–4 for an intensive training session. The performance, Beyond the Starlight, commemorates the centennial birth anniversary of Venerable Master Hsing Yun and the 60th anniversary of Fo Guang Shan’s founding.

The training also serves as preparation for the “Buddha’s Light Music Concert” to be presented at the 2026 BLIA General Conference this October.

A total of 50 choir members participated, including 30 from Toronto, 14 from Ottawa, and 6 from New York. Upon arrival, participants paid respects before the Buddha, followed by welcoming remarks from Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto Venerable Chueh Fan, who emphasized the significance of performing at Lincoln Center and encouraged a focused and disciplined rehearsal approach. A guided temple tour further introduced the temple’s history, architectural features, and the spirit of volunteer service.

Led by conductor Zhuomin Liu, the training centered on intensive rehearsals and recording sessions. Two pieces—I Vow and Great Dharma to the West—were recorded and submitted to BLIA as part of the selection process for the upcoming conference program. Through repeated rehearsal and video review, members refined pitch, rhythm, breathing, and diction while strengthening ensemble cohesion.

Bringing together participants from three regions, the choir reflects both diversity and unity. Despite varied vocal training backgrounds, the integration process not only enhanced artistic quality but also embodied the Humanistic Buddhist spirit of harmony and collective growth.

Venerable Yung Ku, Abbess of Ottawa Temple of Toronto, noted that using music to share the Dharma carries profound meaning, symbolizing both aspiration and continuity. Choir members also shared that the experience

deepened their sense of purpose and connection. For many, performing at Lincoln Center represents not only an artistic milestone, but also a meaningful offering—bringing Humanistic Buddhism to a global stage.
