May 30, 2025

The dragon and lion dance is more than just a lively performance - it is a vibrant expression of Chinese culture and heritage. On May 30, over 40 members of the Fo Guang Toronto Dragon and Lion Dance Group, led by instructor Tom Ly, performed at the Culture Centre of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto. Invited to participate in the center’s Taiwan Night celebration, the team offered blessings through a spirited performance that featured the 24 Seasons Drum and an auspicious lion dance. Their display brought joy and energy to the event, earning enthusiastic applause from more than 400 guests, including community representatives and members of the Taiwanese diaspora.

The program opened with the thunderous rhythm of the 24 Seasons Drum, immediately energizing the room. This was followed by greetings from the team’s junior and senior lions. The youngest performer, just seven years old, showcased impressive skill and poise beyond his years. As the drumming intensified, the atmosphere reached a festive peak. Yi-Peng Liang, Director-General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto, joined honored guests in presenting lucky red envelopes to the junior lions. At the height of the celebration, a red scroll unfurled from the lion’s mouth bearingthe message: “Everything Auspicious, Blessings Fill the World.”

Guests responded with praise and admiration. Toronto City Councillor Parthi Kandavel, attending a lion and dragon dance performance for the first time, said the event gave him a deeper appreciation for the richness of Chinese culture. He noted that it also strengthened connections across communities and cultures. He was especially impressed by the unity and teamwork displayed by the Fo Guang team, describing it as inspiring.
