On September 28, the BLIA Toronto YoungAdult Division (YAD) hosted a “YADminton” gathering at the Royal Badminton Club, drawing nearly 30 participants, including YAD members, Water Drop Tea House and kitchen volunteers, and board members of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Toronto Chapter. Venerable Zhi Guan, Superintendent of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, encouraged participants to view sport as a path to physical and mental well-being.
Planned by YAD secretary Nancy Huang, the event emphasized friendly play and connection. Huang noted that badminton is an accessible way to meet new friends, and said YAD intends to make the activity a monthly offering. YAD vice president Yifei Wang praised the strong turnout and harmonious atmosphere, observing that competitive play and peer coaching developed naturally.
On court, experienced players demonstrated grip and stroke techniques, helping newcomers gain confidence. “Some didn’t know how to play, but everyone wanted to join, so we taught step by step,” said YAD member Michelle Zhou. Friendly matches with scorekeeping added energy and engagement throughout the afternoon.
New member Meiyi Ha Yeung, who learned about YAD online, shared that the welcoming environment strengthened her connection to the group and the temple. Originally from Mauritius, she moved to Canada three years ago and appreciated the opportunity to meet peers through a shared activity.
YAD expressed gratitude to all participants and volunteers for creating a spirited afternoon of fitness, friendship, and exchange, and looks forward to future community sports gatherings.
