Toronto Fo Guang Members Engage in In-Depth Study of Humanistic Buddhism Through Lecture Series

July 24, 2025

On July 24, the Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism (FGSIHB) launched the Canadian segment of its Humanistic Buddhism transmission series, hosted online by Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto. The opening session attracted over 220 Buddha’s Light members from Toronto, Montreal, and Detroit, marking a strong start to the four-part lecture series.

The first session, titled “General Overview,” was delivered by Venerable Miao Fan, Chancellor of FGSIHB. She provided a comprehensive introduction to the series, which aims to offer a structured and accessible interpretation of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s teachings. Venerable Miao Fan described the series as a “GPS” for understanding both the Master’s philosophy and the essence of Humanistic Buddhism—emphasizing that it is a way of life grounded in compassion, wisdom, and kindness.

Abbess Venerable Chueh Fan of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto expressed her appreciation to the Institute for bringing this valuable opportunity to Canadian participants. She also praised Venerable Miao Fan’s longstanding commitment to education and her contribution to the academic propagation of the Dharma.

During the session, Venerable Miao Fan highlighted the three core values of Humanistic Buddhism: human-centeredness, relevance to daily life, and meaningful social engagement. She cited VenerableMaster Hsing Yun’s early efforts, such as organizing Buddha’s Birthdaycelebrations in rural Taiwan, which later evolved into large-scale publice vents—symbolizing Buddhism’s integration into society.

The lecture further explored the historical development of Humanistic Buddhism and the pivotal role of Venerable MasterHsing Yun in formalizing and globalizing the tradition. His teachings, Venerable Miao Fan explained, affirm the pursuit of happiness in this life, while promoting wisdom-based approaches to family and societal relationships.

The Humanistic Buddhism transmission series also serves as an academic framework for organizing andinterpreting the Complete Works of Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Developed by scholars at FGSIHB, the series supports the growth of “Fo Guang Studies” and preserves the vitality of Humanistic Buddhist thought for future generations.

The lecture series continues through August 14, with sessions led by Venerables Miao Fan, Venerable Hui Xi, and Venerable Miao Yuan. Members are encouraged to use the material as a study resource for personal development and spiritual cultivation.
