Spiritual GPS Guides Fo Guang People in Toronto Toward Inner Freedom through the Four Foundations of Mindfulness

April 25, 2025

After an eight-year hiatus, Venerable Chueh Pei, Secretary-general of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) World Headquarters, visited Fo Guang Shan Temple ofToronto. On April 25, 2025, she delivered an inspiring Dharma talk titled "Spiritual GPS – The Four Foundations of Mindfulness to Guide You Home." The event drew nearly 320 participants, with over 200 attending in person and 117 joining online.

In her talk, Venerable Chueh Pei illuminated how the Four Foundations of Mindfulness can serve as a "spiritual navigation system" for modern life, guiding practitioners through the challenges of desire, emotional turbulence, and societal chaos to rediscover inner peace and direction.

"How long has it been since you truly listened to your heart?" she asked, encouraging attendees to reflecton the subtle changes in their minds throughout the day. A guided breathing exercise, accompanied by the soothing sounds of nature, invited participants to observe where their thoughts wandered and to recognize whether their minds remained restless even after returning home.

Venerable Chueh Pei explained the Four Foundations of Mindfulness: observing the body, feelings, mind, and phenomena. In observing the body, participants were guided to understand impermanence and to appreciate their physical form without clinging to youth and beauty. When discussing feelings, Venerable Chueh Pei employed sound effects to demonstrate how external stimuli can easily sway emotions. She emphasized that mindfulness allows individuals to notice emotional shifts without immediately reacting, thus preventing emotions such as anger from "kidnapping" one’s inner stability.

"Everyone faces afflictions, including monastics," she shared. By recognizing the impermanence of thoughts and emotions, practitioners can embrace each day as a fresh start, viewing emotions like flowing clouds that naturally change and dissipate.

Highlighting the observation of phenomena as lacking inherent self, Venerable Chueh Pei underscored the importance of gratitude and compassion. She shared an example from BLIA’s educational outreach in Brazilian slums, where initial concerns were overcome through acts of kindness that ultimately protected the community. "When we sow seeds of goodness, we create hope for ourselves and others," she affirmed.

Venerable Chueh Pei encouraged attendees to incorporate mindfulness into their daily lives, deepen their studyof Buddhist teachings, and find their way home to their true nature.

Following the talk, Venerable Chueh Duo, BLIA Chunghua Vice Secretary-general, led a reflection session where participants shared their insights and experiences.

The event concluded with heartfelt gratitude expressed by Venerable Chueh Fan, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, who thanked Venerable Chueh Pei for her compassionate visit and inspiringteachings.

A special highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Humanistic Buddhism Preaching Medal to Tiger Chen, Advisor of the BLIA Da Tze II Subchapter, recognizing his dedication to spreading the teachings of Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
