Ontario Volunteer Service Awards – Honoring Eight Fo Guang Shan Volunteers

On September 10, the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism hosted the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards at the Mississauga Convention Centre, celebrating individuals who have made long-term contributions to education, healthcare, community service, and faith-based organizations across the province. Nearly 300 attendees gathered for the ceremony, where eight Fo Guang Shan volunteers and Buddha’s Light Scouts from Toronto were recognized for their many years of dedicated service.

Representing the temple, Venerable Zhi Guan, Superintendent of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, offered blessings and expressed heartfelt gratitude to all volunteers for their continued contributions to the community. This year’s program honored 1,132 organizations, 759 youth, and 4,623 adult volunteers across Ontario, collectively contributing more than 2,600 years of service—a testament to the province’s compassionate and multicultural spirit.

Among the honorees, Patrick Wai and Christine Chiu, a couple who have volunteered for 28 years, were recognized for their steadfast support in Toronto and Mississauga. Their daughter now serves as president of the Richmond Hill Subchapter, continuing the family’s legacy of devotion and service. William Wong, who has volunteered for 21 years, contributes through photography, traffic coordination, and the Dragon and Lion Dance Team, helping to bring joyand vitality to temple events.

Also recognized were Ali Lau, president of the Markham Second Subchapter; Amy Huynh,a long-time volunteer at the Water Drop Tea House; and youth volunteers George Chen and Jada Chau, who embody the Three Acts of Goodness through compassionate action and leadership.

Theevening concluded with a meeting between Venerable Zhi Guan and representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport to explore opportunities to promote Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto as a cultural and spiritual hub, continuing to spread the light of Humanistic Buddhism throughout Ontario.
