On February 10, Martin Reid, City Councillor for Ward 9 in Mississauga, hosted a Community Roundtable at Logos Baptist Church, bringing together more than 20 representatives from government, faith organizations, and community groups. The discussion centered on how faith communities can collaborate to cultivate supportive and mentally healthy environments.
Representing Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto were Abbess Venerable Chueh Fan, Venerable Zhi Shen, and Community Outreach Coordinator Nancy Huang. Participants engaged in constructive dialogue on addressing mental health challenges, reducing stigma, and strengthening partnerships between faith-based institutions and professional service providers.
According to 2024 data, nearly half of Peel Region residents report feeling lonely at times or frequently, particularly individuals living alone and newcomers. One-third of respondents experienced discrimination related to race, culture, or ethnicity, while youth and adults over 50 face heightened mental health concerns.
With approximately 450 places of worship across Peel Region and a significant proportion of residents identifying with a faith background, religious communities are trusted and influential partners in advancing mental health awareness and outreach. The roundtable underscored that sustained, community-based initiatives—such as wellness seminars, care groups, volunteer training, referral networks, and small environmental improvements—can foster connection and belonging while generating lasting impact.
Nancy Huang noted that despite diverse religious traditions, participants shared common concerns and a unified commitment to community well-being. As a Buddhist community grounded in the principles of Humanistic Buddhism, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto remains committed to promoting open dialogue, creating safe spaces, and serving society with compassion and sincerity.
