On April 23, Venerable Zhi Shen, representing Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, was invited to participate in an Interfaith Roundtable, joining six representatives from diverse faith traditions in visits to St. Robert Catholic High School and Sacred Heart Catholic High School. More than 70 students engaged in the dialogue, centered on the theme “Humbleness & Humility,” exploring how values of character and faith are understood across traditions.
Representatives from Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Buddhism shared their perspectives. Speaking on behalf of Buddhism, Venerable Zhi Shen drew on the teachings of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, noting that humility is not limited to reverence for the Buddha, but extends to an attitude of equal respect toward all beings. She emphasized that Buddhism places importance on self-cultivation and inner awareness, encouraging individuals to begin with themselves through reflection and mindful adjustment, thereby nurturing a gentle and respectful disposition and fostering harmonious relationships.
During the interactive session, students engaged actively, raising questions on monastic daily life, overcoming arrogance, the meaning of ordination, and whether monastics marry or have families. Venerable Zhi Shen responded with clarity and warmth, explaining that monastic life is grounded in simplicity, discipline, and spiritual focus. She shared that arrogance arises from attachment to the self, and can be gradually transformed through awareness, gratitude, and inclusiveness. Shaving the head, she explained, symbolizes letting go of attachments and returning to one’s pure nature, while ordination represents a life dedicated to cultivation and serving others.
The session concluded with a dedication of merit in English, offering blessings for students to cultivate humility as a foundation for confidence and mutual respect. Student feedback reflected appreciation for the Buddhist perspective, particularly its emphasis on self-discipline and universal respect.
The event fostered meaningful interfaith understanding and encouraged youth to recognize the value of inner development, embodying the spirit of Humanistic Buddhism in engaging with society.
