In celebration of Ontario Culture Days, the Health Dance Class of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto was invited to Meadowvale Community Church on September 26 for a cultural exchange featuring Eight Brocades Qigong and Hunyuan Tai Chi Fan.
Organized by church coordinator Sheila Eastman, the event brought together religious and cultural groups through music, dance, and traditional arts. Instructor Yvonne Wong led five students from the Health Dance Class, while Venerable Zhi Sheng joined the event to support the group and connect with representatives of different faith communities. During the program, Venerable Zhi Sheng introduced Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto and its promotion of Humanistic Buddhism through cultural, educational, and community activities. She also welcomed participants to visit the temple and learn more about its multicultural programs.
Wong led an interactive Eight Brocades Qigong session, inviting the audience to join in. Participants ranging from children to seniors followed the gentle movements, stretching and coordinating their breathing while experiencing a traditional Chinese wellness practice. The class then presented Hunyuan Tai Chi Fan, combining flowing fan movements, music, and traditional wellness practices in a lively performance that received a warm response from the audience.
The exchange grew from a connection with a church volunteer who had previously participated in activities at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto. With culture as a bridge, the event brought together people of different faiths, cultures, and generations, fostering mutual understanding and further interfaith and intercultural exchange.
