“6th Meadowvale Scouts, assemble!” With that cheerful call, more than fifty Scouts and leaders gathered for the 6th Meadowvale (Buddha's Light Toronto) Scouts Autumn Camp, held from October 3 to 5 at Mount Nemo in Burlington. Themed “Every Day is Earth Day,” the three-day camp encouraged participants to live in harmony with nature through hiking, mountain cleaning, nature-inspired art, and homemade vegetarian meals. The program reminded everyone that caring for the planet is not just reserved for April 22, but a daily practice of mindfulness, gratitude, and respect for all living beings. Venerable Ru An, Monastic Advisor of the Buddha's Light Toronto Scouts, and Venerable Zhi Shen joined the camp to offer guidance and encouragement.
Under thoughtful leadership and teamwork, the camp was filled with joyfull earning and discovery. Beaver Scouts made crafts and played outdoor games, while Cub Scouts built and painted miniature wooden cabins, learned to make French toast, and practiced mindful dishwashing after meals. Fallen leaves and twigs became creative art materials, and the litter collected along hiking trails turned into valuable lessons on environmental responsibility.
Senior Scouts and Venturers mentored younger members in pitching tents, preparing meals, and maintaining the campsite. Scout Commissioner Ken Choi and Scouter John Hu demonstrated campfire-building techniques, and the Scouts worked together to create a warm and friendly outdoor home.
The highlight of the camp came during the evening campfire, when Venerable Ru An and Venerable Zhi Shen joined in for skits and songs, including Buddha’s Light Scout from the Sounds of the Human World series. Laughter and singing echoed through the night, filling the forest with joy and connection.
Through this meaningful outdoor experience, the Scouts not only deepened their love for nature but also strengthened teamwork, leadership, and gratitude—truly embodying the spirit that every day is Earth Day.
