Fo Guang Shan Toronto Hosts Triple Gem Refuge and Five Precepts Seminar

August 1, 2026

Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto held a seminar on taking refuge in the Triple Gem and observing the Five Precepts on August 1, drawing 105 participants. The program featured a video teaching by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, an introduction to Buddhist precepts and temple etiquette, and small-group instruction on wearing the traditional haiqing and manyi robes. As the seminar coincided with the Enlightenment Day of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, many attendees seized the opportunity following the Dharma service to commit to taking refuge and receiving the Five Precepts.

The seminar opened with “Upholding the Five Precepts,” a video from Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s One Hundred Lessons on Monastic Affairs. The Master explained that the Five Precepts are not merely standards of conduct for Buddhists, but important guides for cultivating inner peace and building a wholesome and fulfilling life.

He also clarified common questions about the precepts. Regarding the precept against intoxicants, he explained that alcohol can impair judgment and self-control, potentially leading to harmful actions. The precept also includes refraining from encouraging others to drink. He further distinguished between breaking the precepts and holding mistaken views about them, emphasizing the importance of developing a correct understanding of Buddhist ethical practice.

Venerable Zhi Guan, Superintendent of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, then explained the role of the monastic community in providing devotees with the opportunity to receive the precepts, along with proper Buddhist conduct and temple etiquette. She also outlined the meaning of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, as well as the significance of taking refuge in the Triple Gem and observing the Five Precepts.

In the final session, monastics and experienced BLIA members guided participants in wearing the traditional haiqing robe and manyi precept robe. They demonstrated the proper procedures and patiently helped participants adjust their attire. Through instruction and hands-on practice, first-time participants became familiar with the process and prepared to receive the precepts with confidence, joy, and reverence.

The oldest person currently registered to receive the Five Precepts is 93. She initially planned only to take refuge in the Triple Gem, but after attending the seminar with her granddaughter, she resolved to receive the Five Precepts as well. The youngest participants are two brothers, ages six and nine, who will receive the precepts together with their father.
