Fo Guang Shan Toronto Hosts 5-Day “Three Acts of Goodness Drum Camp” for Youth

July 11, 2025

From July 7 to 11, Fo Guang Shan Temple Toronto held its five-day “3 Beats of Goodness Drum Camp,” welcoming over 40 youth aged 6 to 18. Participants explored the art of the 24 Seasons Drum—recognized as part of Malaysia’s intangible cultural heritage—as well as traditional Chinese lion dance. Under the guidance of monastics, they also learned Buddhist etiquette and practiced meditation.

During the opening ceremony, Abbess Venerable Chueh Fan encouraged the campers to fully engage in the experience and to feel the connection between their minds and the rhythm of the drum. Venerable Zhi Guan introduced the students to proper conduct within the temple, while instructors Mr. Tom Ly and Ms. Lee Ly outlined camp guidelines, emphasizing respect for both the instruments and teachers.

Training sessions began with foundational exercises in posture, stance, and rhythm, gradually progressing to more advanced drumming and coordination techniques. Each morning opened with a short Buddhist story led by Venerable Ru Zhong, highlighting values such as kindness and wisdom. Meditation sessions, led by Venerable Ru Sing, helped students center their minds through mindful breathing and align their hearts with the beat of the drum.

Campers were grouped by skill level and received intensive instruction from the teaching team. Notably, a 14-year-old teaching assistant stood out for his leadership and instructional ability.

The camp concluded on July 11 with a performance showcasing the students’ synchronized drumming and lion dance routines, earning praise from parents and monastics alike. Awards were presented to students for their dedication and growth: Brian Romanell and Natalie Kwok received the Outstanding Performance Award; Andy Liang and Eric Liang received the Achievement Award; and Damien Wirawam was honored with the Best Courtesy Award.

Inspired by the experience, many students have since joined the temple’s Lion & Dragon Dance Team to continue their training. “It’s not just about drumming or dancing,” said Venerable Chueh Fan. “It’s about cultivating discipline, respect, and teamwork. We hope each camper brings home the spirit of the Three Acts of Goodness—do good deeds, speak goodwords, think good thoughts—and shares these values with their families.”
