The English Children Dharma Class at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto officially began its new term on October 5, with sessions held simultaneously at Fo Guang Shan Mississauga and the Markham Buddha’s Light Centre. A total of 35 students aged 5 to 12 joined the opening day. This term’s theme, “Set Out with Full Effort, Joy in Every Step,” aims to cultivate teamwork, proper conduct, and an understanding of the Dharma through engaging and interactive activities.
The semester commenced with the recitation of the Ode to the Triple Gem, Morning Prayer, and Dedication of Merit. With palms joined and voices unified, the children chanted with sincerity and reverence, setting a pure and peaceful tone for learning. The first activity, a lively “Tower Challenge” icebreaker, encouraged creativity and collaboration. This was followed by a Buddhist etiquette lesson, where teaching assistants guided the children to practice the Four Comportments — “walk like the wind, stand like a pine, sit like a bell, and recline like a bow” — helping them experience mindfulness and respect through physical movement.
A highlight of the day was the “Temple Treasure Hunt.” Guided by teachers and assistants, students visited the Water Drop Tea House, Buddha’s Cultural Museum, Library, Bookstore, and Five Contemplation Hall. Through hands-on missions such as identifying Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, greeting volunteers, and learning about the Founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the children deepened their understanding of Buddhist culture while having fun.
This year also introduced a parent orientation session, offering families the opportunity to share expectations and participate in the temple’s educational vision. Venerable Ru An, Monastic Advisor of the Children’s Dharma Class, encouraged parents and children to learn and practice together, embodying the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings to nurture hearts of compassion, gratitude, and joy.
