Fo Guang Shan Toronto Celebrates 29 Years — Honoring the Pioneers of Dharma Protection

August 10, 2025

On August 10, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto marked its 29th Anniversary with a heartfelt tribute to the early devotees whose dedication safeguarded and advanced Humanistic Buddhism in Canada. Senior members Qigang Chen and Shanling Fu, Zongxi You and Rachel Fan, as well as Guixiang Fu and Jinyu You, shared moving recollections of their decades-long service to the Dharma.

Over 200 attendees gathered to watch a commemorative video chronicling the temple’s journey—from Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s historic visits to Toronto to the tireless efforts of overseas Fo Guang Shan monastics and lay members who helped establish Humanistic Buddhism in Eastern Canada. The personal stories evoked both laughter and tears, bringing history vividly to life.

Venerable Chueh Fan, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, praised the unwavering commitment of Buddha’s Light members, noting how their readiness to serve and adapt to the temple’s needs continually inspires her. “Your dedication enriches the history of our temple,” the Abbess said, urging all to continue responding to the needs of the community.

The video also featured the temple’s first Abbess, Venerable Yi Hong, who recounted her 1991 decision to remain in Toronto at Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s request. She expressed deep gratitude for the unreserved support of the community: “Without the wholehearted support of the Fo Guang Shan and devotees,it truly could not have been accomplished.” Quoting Venerable Master Hsing Yun, she reminded all, “Where there is the Dharma, there is a way,” and encouraged making vows as the driving force behind achievement.

Speakers reflected on the early days of outreach—from creating posters for Buddhist lectures to welcoming newcomers through ESL classes and intimate study groups. These encounters, they said, forged lifelong bonds and strengthened their Buddhist practice.

BLIA Toronto Director Zongxi You outlined the temple’s growth in three stages—founding, development, and stability—noting milestones such as visits by two Canadian prime ministers, marking Humanistic Buddhism’s recognition in the nation.

Venerable Chueh Fan closed the celebration by encouraging everyone to emulate these early Dharma protectors—taking on responsibilities with courage, serving selflessly, and remaining true to their original aspiration.

The anniversary video is available on the Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSI3QaxQ00A), and the public is welcome to watch.
