On April 30, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto engaged in a meaningful interfaith exchange with local community members during a dialogue session hosted by Community Living Mississauga, a non-profit organization supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities. The event, titled “InterfaithDialogue,” aimed to promote understanding and respect for diverse religious traditions among staff, enhancing the inclusivity of the services they provide.
Approximately 20 staff members participated inthe morning session, which featured Venerable Chueh Fan, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple, as a guest speaker. Her presentation centered on the principles of Humanistic Buddhism, highlighting its emphasis on compassion, mindfulness, and applying Buddhist teachings in everyday life. She also introduced the mission of Fo Guang Shan and the legacy of the founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
Venerable Chueh Fan shared an overview of the temple’s community-oriented programs, including meditation classes, youth and senior offerings, cultural exhibitions, and the spiritual care volunteer team. These initiatives, she explained, aim to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of individuals across all life stages.
During a lively Q&A session, staff posed thoughtful questions on topics ranging from the meaning of "Fo Guang Shan" to the Buddhist perspective on life after death and the role of spiritual care. Abbess Chueh Fan responded by emphasizing Buddhism’s focus on present-moment awareness and ethical living. She noted that spiritual care, particularly in times of illness or grief, helps individuals reconnect with meaning and hope through compassion, presence, and nonjudgmental support.
Also speaking at the event was Pastor George from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, who offered reflections on spiritual care from a Christian perspective. He emphasized that love, service, and openness are foundational to interfaith engagement, regardless of religious affiliation. His comments reinforced the shared values of compassion and community service.
The session concluded with expressions of gratitude from Community Living Mississauga staff, who praised both speakers for their insights. Many attendees remarked that the dialogue deepened their understanding of religious diversity and would enhance their ability to offer respectful, inclusive care to individuals of all faiths.
By fostering mutual respect and understanding, the interfaith dialogue served as a reminder that spirituality —when rooted incompassion —can unite rather than divide, enriching the broader community in lasting ways.
