More than 200 people attended a series of Buddhist lectures at Markham Buddha's Light Center and Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto on June 19 and 20. Presented by Venerable Miao Hsin under the theme "Awaken in One Thought, Galloping Towards Success," the talks explored how a single moment of awakening can transform one's life and set the course toward wisdom, compassion, and enlightenment.
Drawing on Buddhist teachings and her own spiritual journey, Venerable Miao Hsin explained that every person possesses Buddha-nature and the potential to attain enlightenment. However, this innate wisdom is often obscured by attachment, delusion, and the Three Poisons of greed, anger, and ignorance. She encouraged participants to cultivate greater awareness of their thoughts, speech, and actions, noting that the direction of one's mind ultimately shapes one's life.
Reflecting on her path to Buddhism, Venerable Miao Hsin shared that a lifelong curiosity about life and religion led her to discover the Buddha's teaching that all beings have the capacity for awakening. The challenge, she explained, is learning to let go of the attachments and misconceptions that prevent us from recognizing our true nature.
Using stories and practical examples, she emphasized that Buddhist teachings are not intended to instill fear, but to serve as a mirror for self-reflection and personal transformation. Referring to the Buddhist teaching of rebirth, she noted that it is not a warning, but an invitation to examine the habits and choices that shape our lives. The Buddha taught a variety of methods to suit different individuals, all aimed at helping people awaken their inherent wisdom and compassion.
A central theme of the lectures was perseverance in spiritual practice. Rather than focusing on how long the journey to enlightenment may take, Venerable Miao Hsin encouraged participants to remain steadfast and pay attention to the present moment. Quoting a traditional Buddhist saying, she reminded the audience that "delusion may last for countless ages, but awakening can arise in a single thought." What matters most, she emphasized, is not the length of the journey, but whether one is moving in the right direction.
Concluding the lectures, Venerable Miao Hsin encouraged everyone to cherish the precious opportunity of human life, practice the Five Precepts and Ten Wholesome Deeds, and cultivate Bodhicitta—the aspiration to benefit all beings. She noted that the principles of the Three Acts of Goodness and the Four Givings, together with the teachings of Humanistic Buddhism, provide a practical path for transforming everyday life into a journey of wisdom, compassion, and awakening.
Venerable Chueh Fan, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, thanked Venerable Miao Hsin for sharing her insights and acknowledged her significant contributions to Dharma propagation throughout Eastern Canada. Kevin Cao, President of BLIA Toronto, expressed appreciation for Venerable Miao Hsin's guidance and support, while Ken Su, Vice President of BLIA Toronto, encouraged attendees to make meaningful use of their lives and strive to "live three hundred years" in the spirit of Venerable Master Hsing Yun—by creating lasting value through wisdom, service, and compassion.
