On September 13, over 110 students, parents, teachers, and volunteers gathered at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto Chinese School to warmly celebrate the start of the new academic year.

The opening ceremony highlighted the educational vision of founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun, fostering a safe, peaceful environment where children connect with Chinese culture while putting the "Three Acts of Goodness"—do good deeds, speak good words, and think good thoughts—into practice.

Representing the temple, Venerable Zhi Sheng offered words of encouragement and shared her personal journey of learning Chinese from the age of five. She emphasized that true education shapes character and outlook alongside academic learning. Venerable Zhi Shen encouraged parents and teachers to lead by example, replace criticism with encouragement, and respect each child’s unique path. Pointing to the value of active, autonomous learning, she highlighted how serving family, peers, and the community builds compassion, responsibility, and team spirit.

Director of Academic Affairs Hong Liu shared that the school’s goal goes beyond language skills: "It’s about helping children find their cultural roots and build confidence". She expressed deep gratitude to the dedicated volunteer teaching staff who make the school's ongoing growth possible. Demonstrating this spirit of continuity, two alumni have returned as teaching assistants—including opening ceremony emcee Longyue Guo—joining four high school volunteers in passing on love and leadership to younger peers.

With over 60 students enrolled this term, the school welcomed many new families joining through word-of-mouth recommendations. Students were organized into five distinct classes based on age and proficiency following placement tests. While tests were underway, families enjoyed course introductions, film screenings, Oracle Bone script guessing games, and a mindful yoga session led by instructor Fran Li. Meanwhile, the temple library introduced its "Cloud and Water Mobile Library," inspiring parents and children alike to discover new books and fill the campus with a vibrant love of learning.
