On Sunday, June 1, the 6th Meadowvale Scout Group (Buddha’s Light Toronto Scout) held a successful car wash fundraiser in the parking lot of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto. Despite chilly spring temperatures hovering around 10°C and intermittent rain, 18 dedicated Venture Scouts, Scouts, and leaders braved the weather with warmth and determination. The event aimed to raise funds for upcoming summer camping activities while embodying the Humanistic Buddhist principles of the Three Acts of Goodness — do good deeds, speak good words, think good thoughts — and the Four Givings: giving others confidence, joy, hope, and convenience.
Organized and led by the Venture Scouts after more than two months of planning, the fundraiser was a full team effort. From designing posters and acquiring supplies to coordinating the wash process and assigning roles, the youth were responsible for every aspect. Through the experience, they honed skills in communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving, all while living out Buddhist values in practical ways.
Working from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the scouts washed a total of 30 vehicles. Amid soapy buckets and lively laughter, the team moved in smooth coordination: rinsing, scrubbing, drying, and inspecting each vehicle with care. Despite the cold and occasional showers, the scouts remained focused and cheerful, taking only short breaks for lunch inrotation.
Scout Leader Cathy Wong praised the youth’s perseverance: “This activity helped them learn to face challenges and understand the importance of teamwork and responsibility.” The Venture Scouts expressed their pride in seeing their efforts come to life, with one saying, “Watching each car shine gave us a real sense of accomplishment.”
BLIA member Grace Ho, one of many community supporters who participated, remarked, “The scouts were incredibly attentive, even to the smallest details. It was truly moving to see their dedication.”
Founded in 1997, the 6thMeadowvale Scout continues to integrate Buddhist teachings into Scouting. Through activities like this fundraiser, the group fosters youth development rooted in compassion, wisdom, and joyful service, turning everyday actions into meaningful practice.
