To commemorate the 60th anniversary of Fo Guang Shan, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto held the “60 Years of Passing the Lamp Honoring a 100-Year Legacy” Global Heart Sutra Transcription Cultivation on May 16, the founding anniversary of Fo Guang Shan Monastery. Nearly 200 participants joined the event both in person and online under the guidance of Abbess Venerable Chueh Fan.
Following the teachings of Fo Guang Shan founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun, participants mindfully recited and transcribed the Heart Sutra while dedicating the merits of the practice to world peace. The program also included the recitation of “A Prayer for the People Who Listen to the Dharma,” composed by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, as well as a Dharma message by Most Venerable Hsin Bau, Head Abbot of Fo Guang Shan Monastery. The solemn and peaceful atmosphere deeply moved attendees.
In addition to devoted Fo Guang members, many members of the public attended after learning about the event through Facebook and media coverage. Several young adults visited a Buddhist temple for the first time, while local Western participants also joined the practice in traditional Haiqing robes, quietly focusing on each line of the sutra.
Abbess Venerable Chueh Fan encouraged participants to silently recite the sutra inwardly while transcribing, noting that the practice helps cultivate calmness and inner stability. She also invited the community to continue progressing diligently under the guidance of the Dharma.
Many participants shared that the experience brought peace, inspiration, and a deeper connection with the Dharma, while also strengthening their confidence in the continued growth of Buddhism in Western society.
