On February 12, at the gracious invitation of Principal Fayza Prebtani, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto was honored to participate in the Lunar New Year celebration at Markham Gateway Public School as the sole invited community organization. Guided by Fo Guang Shan’s objective “propagating the Dharma through culture,” the Temple brought the spirit of the Three Acts of Goodness—Do Good Deeds, Speak Good Words, Think Good Thoughts—into the school community through meaningful and engaging cultural activities. More than 200 students, parents, and educators gathered to welcome the Year of the Horse in an atmosphere of joy and shared learning.

The celebration opened with the traditional legend of the Nian monster and a lively lion dance, followed by student presentations featuring Chinese attire, singing, and fan dance performances. The campus was filled with festive energy as families moved into the interactive cultural experience area.

Organized by the Temple’s Social and Education Department, Venerable Ru An, together with seven dedicated volunteers, facilitated three hands-on stations. Students were introduced to Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s NewYear blessing, “Harmony and Coexistence, Galloping Towards Success,” expressing aspirations for unity and positive growth. At the calligraphy station, children practiced writing “Peace” and “Auspiciousness,” appreciating the beauty and meaning of Chinese characters. The origami station guided families in folding paper horses, encouraging patience and cooperation. Through traditional ink rubbing, participants imprinted a “Three Acts of Goodness” novice image onto colorful paper, bringing home bilingual reminders of kindness in thought, word, and action.

Senior students contributed as volunteers, assisting with coordination and embodying the spirit of service. Teacher Sarah Kolar noted that students truly enjoyed the opportunity to grow through serving others.

Principal Fayza Prebtani expressed heartfelt appreciation, reaffirming the school’s commitment to multicultural education. She presented a thank-you card inscribed, “Never Forget the Difference You Make,” and conveyed her hope that this meaningful Lunar Festival collaboration will continue as avalued annual tradition.
