On July 4, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto welcomed 11 participants—including two who travelled from Ottawa—for an English Half-Day Meditation Retreat themed "Find Peace in Every Step." Designed for people seeking greater balance in everyday life, the retreat offered a welcoming space to slow down, reconnect with the present moment, and discover how mindfulness can be lived beyond the meditation cushion.
Led by Venerable Ru An, the retreat guided participants through seated meditation, walking meditation, mindful movement, mindful eating, and Dharma discussion. With every breath and every step, participants were encouraged to cultivate awareness, calm the mind, and experience the peace that comes from being fully present.
Drawing on the story of the "Water Drop," Venerable Ru An shared that just as a single drop of water can nourish life, every kind thought, encouraging word, and compassionate action has the power to create positive change. The teaching reminded everyone that wisdom and compassion are not built through extraordinary deeds, but through the small choices we make each day.
Before lunch, participants observed the Five Contemplations, reflecting on gratitude and mindful consumption before enjoying a wholesome vegetarian meal prepared by the temple. Each participant also received a laser-engraved reusable lunch box, a practical reminder that caring for the environment begins with mindful daily choices and reflects the Humanistic Buddhist practice of caring for both the world around us and our inner well-being.
In the afternoon, Venerable Zhi Shen led a discussion inspired by Venerable Master Hsing Yun's essay "The Spirit of the Grass." Through personal reflection and open dialogue, participants explored how resilience, generosity, and simple acts of kindness can strengthen relationships and transform everyday life. They were encouraged to embody the Humanistic Buddhist values of the Three Acts of Goodness and the Four Givings, making compassion an active part of daily living.
Although the retreat lasted only half-day, participants described leaving with a renewed sense of peace, clarity, and purpose. One participant shared, "Today's retreat left me with a powerful and positive mindset. The sincere sharing created a real sense of connection, and I look forward to returning for future retreats." The retreat served as a gentle reminder that lasting transformation often begins with one mindful breath, one kind word, and one compassionate step at a time.
