On May 3, the 6th Meadowvale Scout Group (Buddha’s Light Toronto Scouts) took part in the City of Mississauga’s annual tree planting event. This initiative, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aimed to promote environmental awareness and action. By participating, the scouts embodied values of love, hope, and ecological responsibility.
The event was held at Mattamy Sports Park beside Churchill Meadows Community Centre. Despite the overcast skies, the atmosphere was lively as six scout groups from across Mississauga gathered with a shared commitment to sustainability. Activities kicked off at 10 a.m., beginning with check-in and a guided introduction on tree planting techniques and the importance of environmental stewardship.
The 6th Meadowvale Scout group, led by Commissioner Ken Choi and supported by team leaders, brought 35 participantsincluding scouts and parents. Their teamwork and enthusiasm were evident as they planted trees together. Venerable Ru An, guiding monastic of the Scoutgroup, also joined in. Alongside scouts and families, patiently guiding scouts through each step—from digging and placing saplings to coveringwith soil and watering.
The scouts' muddy hands and beaming smiles showedtheir pride in contributing to the community. Older members, including Scouts and Venturers, took on leadership roles, with some planting up to six trees each. Their dedication reflected the spirit of “Three Acts of Goodness are the most beautiful in the human world.”
More than just a planting event, the day offered a hands-on learning experience. Children gained a deeper respect for nature, while parents and scouts bonded through shared efforts. It was a meaningful blend of education, service, and family connection.
The activity embodied the Fo Guang Shan ideals of the “Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings,” planting seeds of environmental awareness and compassion. Each tree was not just a contribution to the Earth, but also a symbol of hope and commitment to a greener future.
