Cold Weather, Warm Hearts: Buddha’s Light Toronto Scouts Lead Winter Food Drive

December 22, 2025

As winter temperatures in Toronto dropped to −10°C, 6th Meadowvale Scouts (Buddha’s Light Toronto Scouts) showed that kindness and service can overcome even the coldest days. In December, the Scouts organized a Winter Food Drive, bringing together Scouts, Buddha’s Light members, and community supporters to help families in need. All donations were delivered to the Mississauga Food Bank on December 22, offering timely support during the holiday season.

The initiative was led by the Venturers of 6th Meadowvale Scouts, who worked closely with the food bank to understand local needs and plan the drive. Through both in-person collections and online donation options, the campaign made it easy for the community to take part and turn goodwill into meaningful action.

Over the course of the drive, the Scouts collected more than 163 kilograms of dry and canned food, along with nearly CAD 1,100 in monetary donations. Items included vegetarian and non-perishable foods such as canned goods, dry foods, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, peanut butter, energy bars, tea bags, and hot cocoa—practical items that help support families during the winter months. All contributions were entrusted to the food bank for organized distribution.

Starting December 6, Venturers and Scout leaders volunteered every weekend from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the temple, receiving, sorting, and packing donations with care. Younger Scouts also played an important role. Beavers and Cubs participated under the guidance of their leaders, while Venturers helped explain the purpose of the food drive in simple and meaningful ways. Through hands-on involvement, children learned the values of the Four Givings—bringing others confidence, joy, hope, and convenience—while developing compassion from an early age.

Despite snow and icy winds, the Scouts remained cheerful and supportive of one another as they handled each box of donated goods. Through teamwork and service, 6th Meadowvale Scouts put the Three Acts of Goodness into daily practice, warming hearts and spreading kindness throughout the winter season.
