Canada Toronto Vesak Celebration Unites Buddhist Communities in Prayer for Peace

May 23, 2026

Despite heavy rainfall, the 2026 Canada Vesak Celebration at Toronto drew nearly 1,000 monastics, devotees, and volunteers from more than 25 Buddhist temples and organizations across Canada and the United States to Mississauga Celebration Square on May 23. The annual gathering highlighted inter-Buddhist unity, multicultural harmony, and a shared aspiration for world peace.

Jointly organized by The Buddhist Association of Canada Cham Shan Temple, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, Karma Sonam Dargye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Temple, and West End Buddhist Temple and Meditation Centre, the event commemorated Vesak — the celebration of the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and passing.

The ceremony received support from Canadian political leaders, including representatives from the federal government, the Ontario Legislature, and the City of Mississauga. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish also sent congratulatory messages recognizing the Buddhist community’s longstanding contributions to multiculturalism, community service, and social cohesion.

More than 100 monastics representing diverse Buddhist traditions conducted multilingual prayers and blessings. Amid the sound of rain, chanting and prayers resonated throughout the square as participants joined the Buddha Bathing Ceremony, symbolizing purification of the mind and the cultivation of wisdom and compassion.

Special guest Bhikkhu Pannakara, leader of the “Walk for Peace” pilgrimage, shared reflections on inner peace and emotional awareness. Leading the audience in the contemplation “Today is our peaceful day,” he encouraged participants to cultivate mindfulness, gratitude, and compassion in daily life.

Venerable Bhante Saranapala of West End Buddhist Temple and Meditation Centre described the rainfall as “the Buddha’s blessings descending from heaven,” noting that the ceremony would remain a memorable moment in Canadian Vesak history.

Venerable Chueh Fan, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, emphasized that Buddhist teachings continue to offer hope and transformation in an age marked by rapid social change and uncertainty. Inspired by Fo Guang Shan founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s message, “Harmony and Coexistence, Galloping Towards Success,” she highlighted the importance of mutual respect, compassion, and the spirit of harmony in building a peaceful society.

The celebration concluded with cultural performances, Buddhist music, chanting, and presentations recognizing participating organizations and volunteers for their contributions to the event.
