Buddha’s Light Toronto Scouts Embrace “Colours of the World” through Nature and Self-Discovery

June 29, 2025

From June 27 to 29, the Buddha’sLight Toronto Scout (6th Meadowvale Scout) held a vibrant three-day summer campat Camp Manitou, nestled in northern Burlington. Centered on the theme “Colours of the World,” the camp brought together nearly 60 participants, including Beaver, Cub, Scout, and Venture sections. The program was led by 6th Meadowvale Scouts Commissioner Ken Choi, section leaders, and monastic advisor Venerable Ru An, offering an enriching experience that combined outdoor education with life skills development.

Rooted in the principles of the “Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings” and the Scout motto, the Buddha’s Light Scouts emphasize life education to foster character growth, resilience, and a deeper connection with nature. Each unit embraced creativity and collaboration throughout the camp: Beaver Scouts engaged in paper cutting and sing-alongs; Cub Scouts embarked on forest hikes, hand-made flatbread, and practiced self-care and environmental awareness. Scouts and Venture Scouts pitched tents independently, cooked outdoors, and honed skills such as archery, demonstrating initiative, teamwork, and leadership.

Despite facing a thunderstorm on the first night, the scouts responded with composure and teamwork, reinforcing their tents and ensuring safety, which reflected their preparedness and perseverance. The skies cleared over the following two days, allowing all activities to continue smoothly.

A highlight of the camp was the evening campfire program, where each section performed music, dance, or drama pieces that reflected their group spirit and the camp’s central theme. The Venture Scouts presented an original skit incorporating the slogans of each section—Beaver Scouts’ “Sharing, Sharing,” Cub Scouts’ “Be Your Best,” Scouts’ “Be Prepared,” and Venture Scouts’ “Challenge.” The performance humorously yet meaningfully illustrated how the values of scouting and the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings can be lived out in daily life, while celebrating diversity, respect, and cooperation.

The camp concluded with a graduation ceremony for Venture Scouts Darren Chen and Simon Yang, who will be entering university this fall. Venerable Ru An praised their journey from Beaver to Venturer, recognizing their consistent embodiment of scouting values. She encouraged them to carry forward the spirit of goodness, pursue their dreams with courage, and contribute positively to society as compassionate and capable leaders.
