On May 8, The Buddha’s Light Choir of Toronto hosted a “Fundamental Music Theory Workshop” at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, as part of the City of Toronto’s “Multicultural Music Workshop for Seniors Project.” The event aimed to enhance musical literacy and promote cultural appreciation among seniors and local community members.
Led by choir conductor and senior music instructor Ms. Monie Leung, the workshop welcomed over 40 attendees, including choir members, seniors, and members of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA). The session covered core music theory concepts such as major scales, time signatures, rhythm, and vocal classifications, all presented in an engaging and accessible format.
Ms. Leung also delivered a historical overview of Western music theory and traced the evolution of numerical notation from Europe to China, where it was embraced in Buddhist music by Venerable Master Hong Yi. The interactive approach encouraged participation, with many attendees expressing renewed enthusiasm for music.
“This class helped me refresh my knowledge and rekindle my love for music,” said choir member Kally Lam. Class leader Miranda Chu reflected on the connection between music and Buddhist philosophy, noting that “the transitions in music are like the interwoven causes and conditions in Buddhism, both deeply inspiring.”
Venerable Chueh Fan, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, expressed gratitude to Ms. Leung for her dedication to Buddhist music education. The choir plans to continue offering similar programs to promote Humanistic Buddhism through music and strengthen multicultural engagement across Toronto.
