On April 27, 2025, the Scarborough Second Subchapter of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Toronto Chapter held a life enrichment talk at the Buddha’s Light Centre in Markham, providing guidance and inspiration for senior members on how to embrace agingwith dignity, mindfulness, and purpose.
Titled Embracing the Golden Years with Calmand Ease, the talk welcomed 53 participants and featured guest speaker Winnie Kwong, a Level-One BLIA Lay Dharma Lecturer, invited by Subchapter President Kam Wong. The session focused on promoting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being in one’s later years through Buddhist principles and practical self-care.
Venerable Ru An, the subchapter’s Monastic Advisor, opened the event by expressing appreciation for Kwong’s commitment and contributions. She referenced the “Four Seasons of Life” teaching by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, Founder of Fo Guang Shan, reminding attendees that the golden years —like autumn and winter —are rich in insight and inner maturity, and deserving of deep reflection and celebration.
With warmth and humor, Kwong shared her personal journey and offered Buddhist perspectives on aging, encouraging seniors to approach impermanence with calm, and to maintain emotional balance amid life’s changes. “Aging gracefully,” she said, “is not about resisting age, but embracing it with wisdom and serenity.”
Drawing from The 100 Paths to Happiness by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, Kwong introduced the “Seven Essentials for Self-Care in Old Age”: self-healthcare, self-reflection, self-renewal, forming positive relationships, self-entertainment, saving for oneself, and self-affirmation. She urged participants to care for their body and mind, cultivate joy, and create a meaningful final chapter through conscious and compassionate living.
The interactive talk fostered a warm and uplifting atmosphere, resonating deeply with attendees. Many expressed feeling empowered and inspired by Kwong’s relatable and engaging presentation.
President Kam Wong closed the session by thanking the speaker and participants, highlighting the positive impact of the event. She shared plans to continue hosting similar programs to support seniors in living joyful, healthy, and mindful lives through every stage of life.
