On July 12, the Richmond Hill Subchapters 1, 2, and 3 of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Toronto Chapter, in collaboration with Fo Guang Shan Toronto’s Social and Education Department, hosted “Reading for Life: An Afternoon of Joyful Reading and Tea” at the Markham Buddha’s Light Center. The event welcomed over 60 participants for an afternoon of sharing, reflection, and Dharma joy.
Guest speaker Ms. Betty Young, a long-time BLIA member and former team leader of the Social and Education Department, shared insights from her decades of reading and Buddhist practice. She encouraged participants to embrace reading as alifelong habit that nurtures both the mind and spirit.
Venerable Yong Kang, the subchapters’ monastic advisor, opened the gathering with anuplifting message: “Enter this treasure mountain full of joy, and return with treasures.” She emphasized that reading and sharing are paths to awaken inner wisdom and deepen spiritual cultivation.
Ms. Young recalled her connection with Fo Guang Shan, which began in 1991 when sheinterviewed Venerable Master Hsing Yun as a radio journalist. That moment became a turning point in her life. Quoting the Master, she noted that “reading cultivates wisdom, character, and quality of life,” and encouraged everyone to explore reading in all forms.
“Reading isn’t limited to books,” she said. “It includes music, poetry, comics, ordigital media—as long as we stay curious about life.” She also advised reading according to one’s mood and interests to unlock inspiration and insight.
Venerable Ru An, Director of the Social and Education Department, closed the event by reminding participants to cherish quiet time for reading amidst life’s busyness. She echoed Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s teaching that lifelong reading lays the foundation for a meaningful life and helps one live freely and compassionately like Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
The afternoon concluded with warm conversations and heartfelt laughter. Participants left inspired, enriched by practical reading ideas and the joy of Dharma friendship.
