October 26, 2025

On October 26, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto hosted the “Anti-Fraud Awareness Seminar,” organized by the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Toronto North York First and Second Subchapters. The keynote speaker, Detective Constable Barry Zhang from the Toronto Police Service, introduced the concept of online fraud and outlined common scam types such as online shopping, romance, and parcel delivery scams. He emphasized the importance of recognizing warning signs, seeking help promptly, and reporting incidents to the police. The seminar drew about 60 attendees who gained valuable knowledge to protect themselves and theirfamilies.

Venerable Ru Zhong, Superintendent of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, remarked that scams are widespread—even temples have received fraudulent messages. “Without right understanding and right view, it is easy to fall into traps,” she said. “Buddhists are compassionate by nature, but the Buddha also taught us to guard against greed, for greed easily leads to deception.”

A pre-recorded message from Venerable Chueh Pei, Secretary General of BLIA World Headquarters, highlighted the alarming scale of financial losses caused by fraud in Taiwan and reminded members that BLIA’s creed prohibits borrowing or lending money. She emphasized the importance of understanding cause and effect and reaffirmedth at Fo Guang Shan monastics never conduct private fundraising.

Detective Constable Zhang cautioned that “today’s scammers can operate from anywhere in the world.” He advised vigilance against suspicious calls, texts, or emails impersonating government agencies, banks, or relatives, and shared practical safety tips such as verifying email senders and websites, using VPNs on public Wi-Fi, creating strong passwords, and enabling multi-factor authentication.

The seminar concluded with remarks from Grace Lee, President of BLIA Toronto North York Subchapter, who thanked Detective Constable Zhang for his informative presentation. On behalf of the temple, Venerable Ru Zhong presented him with “A Compassionate Ferry: Where is Guanyin Bodhisattva?” by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, expressing gratitude for his support in promoting anti-fraud awareness.
