BLIA Toronto Da Tzu Subchapter Hosts Forest Bathing to Cultivate Inner Peace and Connection with Nature

July 12, 2025

On July 12, the Da Tzu Subchapter 2 of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA)Toronto Chapter hosted a forest bathing experience at Riverwood Conservancy inMississauga. The event was guided by Ms. Sock Gee Gan, a certified foresttherapy guide accredited by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT), and brought together 14 members and friends for a morning of mindfulness and renewal in nature.

Titled “Forest Heart,” the session encouraged participants to awaken their senses, slow down, and fully immerse themselves in the natural environment. Surrounded by vibrant greenery and gentle breezes, participants engaged in mindful practices that promoted inner peace, self-awareness, and a deeper connection to the present moment. By stepping away from daily routines, they discovered the true meaning of “rest” and “repose.”

Venerable Ru Sing, the subchapter’s monastic advisor, offered reflections based on the teachings of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng: “The wind moves, the banner moves, yet it is the mind that moves.” She reminded participants that many of life’s struggles stem from internal attachments, and that by letting go, one can find clarity and liberation. Nature, she explained, serves as a mirror, guiding us back to our true essence.

Amid the tranquil setting, accompanied by bird song and the subtle fragrance of flowers, attendees resonated with the Buddhist teaching: “One flower, one world; one leaf, one Bodhi.” The experience became more than a meditative walk, it evolved into a spiritual practice aligned with the self, with nature, and with the Dharma.

The session concluded with a moment of quiet reflection, as participants sipped warm, homemade mugwort tea together under the open sky. Gratitude and serenity filled the air.

This forest bathing activity not only supported physical and emotional well-being but also served as a living expression of Humanistic Buddhism. Through nature-based practices infused with compassion and mindfulness, the Da Tzu Subchapter continues to inspire others to integrate Buddhist wisdom into everyday life.
