On October 18, the First and Second Scarborough Subchapters of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Toronto Chapter held a joint Sutra Transcription Practice at the Buddha’s Light Center in Markham. Led by Venerable Zhi Shen, the event gathered 66 participants, including Second Subchapter President Kam Wong, First Subchapter Vice President Stella Ng, BLIA Toronto Board Committee Member Betty Young, Supervisor May Ho, as well as BLIA members and friends.

The session began with five minutes of sitting meditation and the chanting of the Heart Sutra, allowing participants to calm their bodies and minds. With steady focus, they then transcribed the sutra stroke by stroke, dedicating the merits to all beings. The tranquil atmosphere reflected the collective mindfulness and devotion of the group.

Upon completion, Venerable Zhi Shen led the recitation of A Prayer for the People Who Listen to the Dharma written by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founder of Fo Guang Shan. She explained the four key benefits of sutra transcription: enhancing concentration, cultivating patience, drawing closer tothe Dharma, and nurturing wisdom.

Venerable also shared that sutra transcription is not merely copying sacred text, but a method of mental cultivation. Through this focused practice, one learns to release attachments, transcend illusions, and return to a state ofinner purity and stillness.

Following the practice, participants enjoyed refreshments prepared by the subchapters. Organizers expressed the hope that through sutra transcription, practitioners may rediscover peace and mindfulness amid the pace of modernlife, allowing the joy of Chan and the light of Dharma to continue flourishing in their daily experience.
