What defines true wealth and nobility in life? Venerable Miao Hsin from Vancouver Fo Guang Shan, pointed out that genuine wealth comes from generosity, and true nobility is cultivated through virtue and wisdom.
On June 13, Venerable Miao Hsin shared these insights during a Cantonese Dharma talk titled “Disciple of the Buddha – From Ignorance to Wisdom: A Bright Future Awaits”, held at the Buddha’s Light Centre in Markham. The event was co-hosted by Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto and the Toronto Chapter of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA), drawing over 300 participants both in person and online.
Opening with the question, “Do you enjoy wealth and nobility?”, Venerable Miao Hsin invited attendees to reflect on how Buddhism views these ideals. Rather than being defined by status or possessions, she explained that wealth arises from the act of giving, and nobility is reflected in one’s cultivation of character and wisdom. Referencing historical figures like the descendants of Confucius, she illustrated that true dignity is passed down not through bloodlines, but through the transmission of values.
She further explained that being a “child (disciple) of the Buddha” means more than a title—it signifies taking refuge in the Triple Gem and walking the path of awakening as a spiritual heir of the Buddha. Drawing on the Lotus Sutra and its “Parable of the Poor Son,” Venerable Miao Hsin emphasized that all beings possess inherent Buddha-nature. However, ignorance and attachment obscure this truth, preventing people from realizing their inner treasure.
Through relatable analogies such as seeing an apple, she described the interplay of sense faculties and consciousness. She urged the audience to cultivate mindfulness through precepts, concentration, and wisdom, and to guard the senses to maintain clarity and peace of mind. Quoting Fo Guang Shan’s founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, she reminded listeners that practicing the Three Acts of Goodness naturally illuminates the mind and purifies the heart.
Venerable Chueh Fan, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, praised Venerable Miao Hsin’s longstanding contributions and her engaging teaching style. On behalf of the organizers, BLIA Toronto Vice President Rachel Fan presented a souvenir to express gratitude. The talk left attendees feeling uplifted, inspired, and more connected to the path of wisdom.
