More than 18 media outlets gathered at the Markham Buddha's Light Center on May 27 for a preview of the upcoming Interfaith Prayers for Peace & Harmony and Buddha’s Light Vegetarian Food Fair, to be held on June 14 at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto.
Hosted by Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto and the BLIA Toronto Chapter, the annual event brings together faith leaders, community organizations, volunteers, and families to promote compassion, cultural diversity, environmental sustainability, and community well-being.
Speaking at the press conference, Venerable Zhi Guan, Superintendent of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, emphasized the importance of fostering harmony and mutual understanding in today’s increasingly diverse society. Through interfaith prayers, cultural activities, and vegetarian cuisine, the event encourages people of all backgrounds to come together in the spirit of peace and respect.
A new addition this year is the Spiritual Wellness Workshop, featuring meditative watercolor painting, mindfulness breathing exercises, and interactive contemplative experiences. Stephanie Hong, a registered psychotherapist and coordinator of the workshop, said the sessions are designed to help participants manage stress, cultivate mindfulness, and reconnect with inner peace.
Kevin Cao, President of the BLIA Toronto Chapter, introduced the vision and mission of the Buddha’s Light International Association, founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun to empower lay Buddhists to serve society. He noted that the event promotes healthy vegetarian living, environmental and mental wellness, and charitable giving while strengthening community connections.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the commemorative exhibition, Fo Guang Shan 60 Years of Passing the Lamp Honoring a 100-Year Legacy, introduced by Rachel Fan, Vice President of the BLIA Toronto Chapter.
According to Bernard Teoh, Vice President of the BLIA Toronto Chapter, this year’s Food Fair will feature nearly 40 booths offering more than 125 international vegetarian dishes and beverages. Families can also enjoy cultural performances, lion dances, face painting, hands-on crafts, and interactive activities for children.
Now celebrating more than 20 years in the Greater Toronto Area, the Buddha’s Light Vegetarian Food Fair continues to bring people together through friendship, service, and shared values, creating a welcoming space where community and harmony can flourish.
