Turning Buddhist Wisdom into Action: Toronto Reading Seminar Inspires Compassion and Harmony

On October 17, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto hosted a Humanistic Buddhism Reading Group Seminar, bringing together more than 30 participants to explore how Buddhist wisdom can enrich everyday life. Through guided discussions and interactive activities, participants reflected on self-awareness, compassion, and harmony, drawing inspiration from Wise Thoughts, Modern Mentality by Fo Guang Shan founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun.

In her opening remarks, Abbess Venerable Chueh Fan emphasized that reading goes beyond acquiring knowledge. It is a pathway to understanding Buddhist principles, recognizing causes and conditions, and cultivating self-awareness. She encouraged participants to embrace lifelong learning and apply Buddhist wisdom to contemporary challenges.

BLIA Lay Dharma Teacher Raymond Tang led a discussion on "Self-Awareness and Practicing the Buddha's Way," emphasizing that Buddhist practice extends beyond seeking blessings. Genuine cultivation means transforming inner awareness into compassionate action through patience, kindness, and personal responsibility.

Reading group facilitators Hong Liu and Xiaodan Wang explored "Promoting Buddhism—Unity for Peace," highlighting four principles advocated by Venerable Master Hsing Yun: non-self, compassion, respect, and equality. Interactive activities demonstrated how cooperation, mutual understanding, and respect for differences can foster harmony in families, communities, and society.

Participants then gathered in seven Chinese- and English-speaking discussion groups, sharing personal experiences and exploring practical ways to apply Buddhist teachings at home, in the workplace, and throughout daily life. Group representatives presented their reflections, reinforcing the value of collective learning and shared wisdom.

Temple Superintendent Venerable Zhi Guan shared how participation in reading groups had shaped her spiritual journey and inspired her pursuit of Buddhist teachings. She introduced four stages of learning—hearing, contemplation, practice, and realization—encouraging participants to transform knowledge into meaningful action.

The seminar concluded with Venerable Chueh Fan presenting appreciation gifts to the three facilitators, celebrating a shared commitment to lifelong learning and the practice of Humanistic Buddhism.
