Toronto Buddha’s Light Scouts Celebrate Thanksgiving Through Friendship, Teamwork, and Gratitude
October 9 to 11, 2026
What better way to celebrate Thanksgiving than by sharing friendship, lending a helping hand, and appreciating those around us? From October 9 to 11, the 6th Meadowvale Scout Group (Toronto Buddha’s Light Scout Group) held its annual autumn camp at Manitou Scout Camp in Milton, Ontario. Inspired by the theme “Friendgiving,” the three-day camp brought Scouts together to explore nature, develop outdoor skills, and experience the joy of gratitude, teamwork, and caring for others.
Throughout the camp, Scouts of different ages embraced new challenges while supporting one another. Venturer Scouts practised setting up tents independently, while Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts prepared songs for the evening campfire. Guided by their leaders, younger Scouts explored colourful autumn trails, tested their balance on narrow beams, and built confidence through outdoor adventures.
Hands-on activities added to the excitement. From woodworking to making pizzas and waffles, Scouts developed practical skills through teamwork and shared experiences. Cub Scouts also tried archery under the guidance of Scout Leader Alvin, learning patience, concentration, and perseverance.
A highlight was the evening campfire, hosted by the Venturer Scouts. Songs, creative performances, and laughter brought everyone together in a warm celebration of friendship. Several longtime leaders wore campfire blankets adorned with badges earned over 20 to 30 years of Scouting, reflecting their dedication and the spirit of service passed from one generation to the next.
Beyond outdoor adventures, the camp brought the values of Humanistic Buddhism to life through gratitude, compassion, and service. By sharing responsibilities, helping friends, and appreciating the efforts of leaders and families, Scouts discovered that Thanksgiving is more than saying “thank you”—it is about putting gratitude into action.
As the camp concluded, Scouts returned home with new skills, lasting friendships, and meaningful memories. Above all, they carried a simple lesson: every act of kindness, every helping hand, and every shared moment can make the world a little warmer.
