Three Ontario University Buddha’s Light Clubs Connect Mindfulness, Friendship, and Compassion

More than 40 university students and young adults gathered at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto on October 11 for a Thanksgiving weekend visit that brought together mindfulness, Buddhist values, and friendship across three Ontario universities.

Students from the Buddha’s Light Clubs of the University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, and McMaster University joined Toronto’s Fo Guang Young Adult Division for a day of learning, reflection, and connection. The gathering encouraged young people to bring kindness, compassion, and positive action into their campus communities.

During a guided temple tour, students learned about the life and teachings of Fo Guang Shan founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Venerable Ru An then led a meditation session, inviting participants to observe their breathing, posture, and heartbeat. The practice introduced mindfulness as a way to develop self-awareness and respond more calmly to everyday challenges.

Venerable Zhi Guan, the temple’s superintendent, explained the significance of offering flowers to the Buddha. Through this symbolic practice, students expressed gratitude, respect, and positive intentions while reflecting on their personal aspirations.

Welcoming the group, Abbess Venerable Chueh Fan shared how encountering Humanistic Buddhism during university inspired a lifelong commitment to Buddhist practice. Drawing on personal experience, the Abbess emphasized that Buddhist teachings become meaningful when put into action.

Venerable Chueh Fan encouraged students to embrace the Three Acts of Goodness—do good deeds, speak good words, and think good thoughts—and the Four Givings: give others confidence, joy, hope, and convenience. These principles offer practical guidance for building supportive friendships and contributing positively to campus life.

Leaders from the three university clubs shared their aspirations for strengthening Buddhist learning and student communities. McMaster club president Simon expressed enthusiasm about the club’s revival this year and hopes to welcome more students.

Despite the rain, participants enjoyed the colourful autumn foliage together, strengthening friendships across campuses. The gathering highlighted how mindfulness, compassion, and small acts of kindness can extend beyond the temple into classrooms, friendships, and everyday life.
