Aging with Confidence: Fo Guang Shan Toronto Helps Seniors Navigate Long-Term Care
October 13, 2026
Planning for future care needs can bring peace of mind to seniors and their families. On October 13, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto welcomed 32 participants to a special lecture on long-term care resources, combining practical guidance with Buddhist teachings on mindful aging and compassionate living.
The lecture, Life in Long-Term Care Homes and the Application Process, was presented by Isabella Tong, a registered social worker from Yee Hong Centre in Mississauga. Organized as part of the temple’s Senior Activity Program, the session helped participants better understand Ontario’s long-term care system and prepare for future needs with greater confidence.
Tong introduced living arrangements, eligibility requirements, application procedures, costs, and available support services. She emphasized the importance of early planning, encouraging seniors to explore their options and discuss future care preferences with family members while they can make informed decisions.
The event also marked the opening of the Senior Activity Program’s autumn term. Participants enjoyed Buddhist knowledge quizzes and puzzles, keeping their minds active while strengthening friendships through lifelong learning.
In preparation for Medicine Buddha’s Birthday, Venerable Yong Kang introduced the significance of the Medicine Buddha Mantra and guided participants in chanting. Through this practice, seniors explored how mindfulness, compassion, and inner calm can help them navigate the physical and emotional changes of aging.
Venerable Yong Kang encouraged participants to care for both body and mind, making good use of community resources while cultivating gratitude, joy, and wisdom through Buddhist practice. On behalf of the temple, she presented Tong with A Life of Three Acts of Goodness in appreciation of her professional guidance.
