一句「為了佛教」，六十年前(1967 年)，星雲大師不顧眾人反對，毅然決然地在這片佈滿荊棘的荒地建寺，當年五月十六日奠基，定名「佛光山」，並立下「佛光普照三千界,法水長流五大洲」的宏願。

星雲大師不僅開山，也為當代人間佛教開闢出一條「佛光大道」!

With those words, “for the sake of Buddhism” sixty years ago, in 1967, Venerable Master Hsing Yun defied the objections of all those around him and resolved without hesitation to build a monastery on this bamboo-covered land. On May 16 of that year, the foundation stone was laid, and the monastery was named “Fo Guang Shan.” With it, the Venerable Master proclaimed the great vow:

“May the Buddha’s light shine universally on the three thousand realms; May the Dharma stream flow across all five continents.”

Venerable Master Hsing Yun did not merely found a monastery, he also blazed a great path of Buddha’s Light for Humanistic Buddhism in the modern age.
